The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off winning their second straight Super Bowl last season, and they bolstered their already strong roster through the 2024 NFL Draft with some exceptional looking picks. The guy that Chiefs fans are most excited about, though, is former Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, and it looks like his new quarterback Patrick Mahomes is pumped up to have him on board too.
Worthy was selected with the 28th overall pick of the draft after the Chiefs traded up to get him, as he wowed talent evaluators everywhere with his impressive combine performance, which included him running a record-setting 4.21 second 40-yard dash. The Chiefs certainly need playmakers who can open the field, and Worthy relayed that Mahomes has already let him know how excited he is to have the talented Longhorns product at his disposal moving forward.
“I talked to him — connected with him a little bit. He was excited about me coming into the camp. It’s amazing just to be able to have that quarterback that wants you. That means they’re obviously going to try to find a way to get you the ball and make you a part of the offense. I feel like everybody would want to play for Pat. just how amazing a quarterback he is and how personal he is.” – Xavier Worthy, Arrowhead Pride
Worthy boosted his draft stock in a big way at the combine, but he also put together a very strong campaign for Texas in 2023 (75 REC, 1014 YDS, 5 TD). Worthy has proven himself to be a speedster who can rip off a big play at any given time, while also having a nose for the endzone, as he scored 26 touchdowns throughout the course of his three-year collegiate career.
While the Chiefs did win it all last season, they struggled to find consistent playmakers alongside star tight end Travis Kelce throughout the year. Rashee Rice emerged as the team’s top wideout, but he’s embroiled in legal troubles currently, which makes the addition of Worthy all the more important. And beyond him, Kansas City also went out and signed Marquise Brown in free agency to further bolster Mahomes’ pass catcher corps.
All in all, the Chiefs look like an even scarier team than the one that just won a Super Bowl, which is a pretty frightening proposition. We’ve seen what Mahomes is capable of with a less-than-stellar crew of pass catchers, so he should be able to make things work with Worthy. And if this duo can get in sync with each other right off the bat, they could end up wreaking some serious havoc on the league in 2024 and beyond.
