The Kansas City Chiefs drafted speed merchant Xavier Worthy, giving Patrick Mahomes a deep-threat weapon, but could that mean offensive fireworks in 2024?
Patrick Mahomes finally has a home-run weapon back in his offensive arsenal after the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Xavier Worthy in the first round.
While the Chiefs also signed Marquise Brown in free agency, Worthy looms as the ace in Andy Reid’s deck. Having not had a speed burner like Worthy since the days of Tyreek Hill, Kansas City now had a bonafide home-run threat on any given play.
Everything else about the Chiefs’ offense last season was up to standard, but it was the lack of depth and deep threat that the team was missing. Well, now they have both.
For Bleacher Report, the top storyline will be how Worthy integrates with the offense and how Reid uses him.
“Worthy is an explosiveness playmaker who will force mismatches early in his career, but he’s more than just speed,” Bleacher Report writes. “His ability to snap off routes, take it the distance on designated touches and outrun undisciplined angles will add a unique element to the already explosive Chiefs offense. The rich got richer in Kansas City this offseason, and fans should be on their edge of their seat to watch the fireworks this fall.”

What Worthy will be able to do for the other weapons on the field for Mahomes is crucial. Already having to deal with Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice (we think), defenses now have to worry about Worthy and Brown zooming past them.
Defenses could be forced to sit deep in an attempt to stop Mahomes dialing up the launch codes, which would, in turn, create pockets of space for Kelce and Rice to go about their business. Not to mention Isiah Pacheco and the run game, either.
The Chiefs lacked explosive plays last season but still managed to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Now that Mahomes has that in his arsenal, the fireworks could be about to return to Arrowhead Stadium.
