Jaelan Phillips has not yet participated in Miami Dolphins practice sessions this season, but his dedication continues to make a strong impression on his coaching staff. The fourth-year outside linebacker is exerting tremendous effort in his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, being proactive both during team meetings and on-field activities, aiming to be fully prepared the moment he gets the medical go-ahead.
New outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow praised Phillips before Friday’s practice, noting, “The guy’s really driven. He approaches his rehab process with a lot of intensity, and we’re providing all the support we can since he’s eager to return to play. His focus in meetings is sharp, and when it’s time to work, he’s all in. He’s as motivated as anyone I’ve seen in this league.”
Currently placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list throughout training camp, the timeline for Phillips’ return remains uncertain. If he is not activated by the roster cutdown day, he would miss the first four games of the season. However, there’s optimism that this scenario can be avoided, with Phillips doing everything possible on his end.
Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver also shared his enthusiasm about Phillips’ progress, especially highlighting his exceptional speed during rehabilitation. “He’s simply a marvel to watch and is eager to get back on the field,” Weaver said. He shared a clip showcasing Phillips’ speed during rehab that was very promising. According to Weaver, “He’s faster than any guy of his size I’ve ever seen.”
While Phillips’ role requires quick bursts of speed, his overall athletic ability suggests he won’t lag in broader physical demands. Insights from the coaching staff suggest that Phillips could recover sooner than anticipated, maintaining focused on his playbook knowledge and leadership, even off-field.
In essence, Phillips is utilizing his time effectively, staying mentally present and strategically preparing to maximize his impact upon his return.
