The star duo have suited up in Kansas City’s two prior preseason tune-ups, both of which ended in defeat against the Jaguars and Lions respectively.
But on Monday, Reid revealed that Mahomes and Kelce – and the rest of the team’s starters – would likely sit against Chicago.
‘As far as the rotation goes for the Bears,’ I’ll probably sit the starters the way it looks right now and we’ll have the other guys get out there and play,’ he told reporters. ‘We’ll just see how that goes repetition-wise.’
Reid added that his decision took into account how many snaps the offense has taken in training camp as well, with the longtime coach revealing that the team had taken 50 more snaps this year in training camp than last year.
It’s common for established starters to see very limited action in the preseason, as Mahomes has attempted just 20 passes across two games this preseason.
After facing the Bears in the preseason, the Chiefs will open their season vs. the Ravens on September 5.
Prior to returning to training camp, Mahomes enjoyed a well-earned offseason break as he and his wife Brittany and their children vacationed in Portugal in June.
Earlier this offseason, the couple and their kids enjoyed also family vacation in Mexico, over a month after the Chiefs’ second straight Super Bowl victory.
Kelce, meanwhile, had a hectic offseason following girlfriend Taylor Swift as she toured throughout Europe.
However, while he took in Swift’s Eras Tour in several major cities, he also enjoyed a more low-key double date with Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.
Back in July, the two couples met for dinner in Amsterdam, with the Mahomes in the Dutch capital to see Swift perform.
‘We were just having fun and enjoying a dinner just like anyone else would. That’s what makes it so great,’ Mahomes said recently to The Athletic.
‘We don’t make it more than what it is; it’s just friendship, fellowship and enjoying everyone’s success.’
Kelce and Mahomes will look to keep their on-field partnership rolling in their eighth season together.
