Did Stephen Ross just hand Mike McDaniel a contract extension disguised as a stay of execution? On the surface, locking down your head coach through the 2028 season screams confidence.
But look closer, folks. The Dolphins, despite boasting an offense that could light up a scoreboard faster than you can say “Tua to Waddle,” still left fans and analysts scratching their heads last season.
They couldn’t quite crack the code against top-tier teams, and let’s not even talk about the playoffs. So, is McDaniel really safe, or is this extension just delaying the inevitable?
Let’s be real, folks. Ross isn’t exactly known for his patience.
But at his age, he’s likely not looking to hit the reset button on the whole shebang. Rebuilding takes time, something a man in his mid-80s might not be too keen on spending.
Plus, firing McDaniel would mean showing Chris Grier the door too, and let’s be honest, Ross probably doesn’t have the stomach for another round of interviews and press conferences.
However, what if he decides to pull off a stunner? What if Ross, in a move that would shake up the league, decides to bring in a proven winner? Enter Mike Vrabel.
This guy is the definition of a player’s coach. He took the Tennessee Titans, a team that was, let’s just say, less than inspiring, and turned them into a perennial playoff contender. Two double-digit win seasons, a couple of AFC South titles, and three playoff appearances – that’s the Vrabel effect, folks.
He took Ryan Tannehill, a quarterback many had written off, and molded him into a legitimate threat. Vrabel commands respect, and his teams play with a discipline and accountability that’s been sorely lacking in Miami.
Look, we’re not saying McDaniel is getting his walking papers anytime soon. The Dolphins would have to have a monumental collapse the likes of which haven’t been seen in South Florida since Cam Cameron was the coach. But, let’s be honest, stranger things have happened in the NFL.
With that said, Vrabel will be someone to keep in mind if the Dolphins end up doing the unthinkable with their current head man.
