Jaelan Phillips is encouraging Chop Robinson, the Dolphins’ first-round pick, to be more expressive on the field, particularly when making significant plays. Although Phillips is satisfied with Robinson’s performance, including his strong work ethic and mastery of the playbook, he believes Robinson could benefit from showing more enthusiasm during games.
Phillips is working closely with the team’s young edge rushers like Robinson, especially while he and Chubb are not fully operational. He aims to inject a sense of excitement and celebration into their game, emphasizing the motivational boost that can come from displaying emotion after success on the field.
“He’s incredibly talented and even better than I was as a rookie,” Phillips commented on Robinson, praising his athleticism and drive. “But he doesn’t tend to celebrate much, and I want to change that.”
Robinson acknowledges his reserved nature and typical focus on the next play, but he admits that Phillips has started encouraging him to embrace his successes. During a joint practice with the Falcons, Robinson felt the excitement and recognized the value in celebrating achievements.
“I’m not usually one to show a lot of emotion, but Jaelan is bringing that out in me,” Robinson said. “After getting cheered on for my plays during practice, I realize that confidence and celebration might become a bigger part of my game.”
Robinson did not participate in the first preseason game but engaged fully in practice sessions and is gearing up for an upcoming game against the Washington Commanders. Even as he preps for his debut, Robinson is absorbing everything Phillips teaches him about the game, including how to react and carry oneself on the field.
“I’m learning a lot from Jaelan. I’m picking up key advice from someone who knows how to make an impact,” Robinson shared. “And now with his encouragement, when I do make that big play, I’ll be sure to show off that chop celebration we talked about.”
Robinson remains focused on learning and improving as he steps into his role with the Dolphins, aiming to fully embrace the more expressive style Phillips advocates.
