The Miami Dolphins suffered a heavy defeat against the Buffalo Bills, a game that saw starting left tackle Terron Armstead leave the field with a shoulder injury. Armstead’s departure led to Kendall Lamm stepping in, but the team may have a better option in rookie Patrick Paul if Armstead’s absence is prolonged.
Head coach Mike McDaniel addressed Paul’s absence, citing the rookie’s inexperience and the game’s intensity as reasons for sticking with Lamm. However, Paul, a second-round pick, had a strong preseason, playing nearly every snap across three games. This experience should have prepared him for a situation like this, one that many saw coming.
Armstead’s injury history is well-documented, and it was a matter of when, not if, he would miss time. While a formidable force when healthy, maintaining that health has been a constant challenge. The severity of his recent injury remains unclear, with a potential absence ranging from one week to a month.
While Lamm provides a capable presence at left tackle, Paul represents the future at the position. Delaying his development with limited playing time doesn’t benefit the team in the long run. McDaniel did offer a glimmer of hope, stating that initial reports didn’t indicate a season-ending injury.
Miami’s offensive line struggles were evident. Despite improved run blocking compared to their previous game, pass protection and ill-timed penalties continue to plague the unit.
While Paul might not be ready for a full-time role, gaining experience is crucial. If Lamm is the temporary solution, so be it.
But if Paul is the future, the Dolphins must expedite his development with valuable game time. There’s no time like the present.
