The Miami Dolphins are facing a crucial decision at quarterback following Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion on Thursday night.
With Tagovailoa’s return date uncertain, the team must determine the best course of action for their season.
Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson struggled in Tagovailoa’s absence, raising concerns about the team’s ability to compete with him at the helm. The Dolphins’ lack of depth at wide receiver, beyond stars Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, was also apparent in their game against the Bengals, with costly mistakes from Grant DuBose and Robbie Chosen.
While sticking with Thompson and Tim Boyle until Tagovailoa’s return is an option, signing a veteran quarterback might be the most strategic move. This is especially true if the team believes Tagovailoa’s absence will be significant.
One potential option is former Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, currently a free agent.
Tannehill is considered by some to be the best free agent quarterback currently available.

While some question his fit in the Dolphins’ current offensive scheme, Tannehill possesses a skillset that could benefit the team. Tannehill is not a deep-read quarterback; in other words, he doesn’t have great progression after the second read.
Tannehill can get the ball out quickly enough, and he is accurate, more so than he is given credit for. Tannehill can throw the ball downfield, and that is where Hill and Waddle come into play.
He can run the ball, and yes, as simple as it sounds, he can feed the ball to De’Von Achane.
His familiarity with the organization could also ease the transition.
However, the possibility of Tannehill’s return is complicated by the circumstances surrounding his departure from Miami. The Dolphins’ decision to trade Tannehill and seek a new quarterback could create tension.
Ultimately, the Dolphins’ decision will depend on the severity of Tagovailoa’s injury and the team’s willingness to reconcile with Tannehill. If the Dolphins aim to remain competitive in the division, bringing back Tannehill might be the best option available.
