City won the ninth match in a row to return to the top of the table, after defeating West Ham 3-0 in the match of round 28 of the Premier League.
Haaland took the center of the match with a goal to make it 2-0 in the 70th minute, to set a Premier League scoring record. The Norwegian striker scored 35 goals in just 31 matches at the tournament, bringing his all-field record to 51 goals in 45 matches. He contributed to Man City’s ninth consecutive victory in the Premier League, to go ahead of Arsenal by one point. Pep Guardiola’s teachers and students also have a match yet to play, and are close to the third championship in a row.
Man City continues to be without midfielder Kevin de Bruyne due to injury, while goalkeeper Ederson is a reserve to give up the main catch for Stefan Ortega. Striker Julian Alvarez replaced De Bruyne, so he had to step back as an attacking midfielder, while Erling Haaland still played at the top. In the midfield, midfielder John Stones has been promoted to play as a central midfielder in recent times. This helps the host to control the game better due to the addition of midfield personnel.
Man City dominated in the first half with a possession rate of nearly 80%. However, their finishing performance was not good when two kicks hit the post in two minutes. 30 minutes, Jack Grealish pulled the ball to break through and then shot, but goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski poured his finger to push the ball into the post. Two minutes later, Rodri beat Fabianski but the Spaniard’s shot hit the edge of the post, cut across the goal and then drifted all the way across.
It seemed that Man City was less charming in this match, they scored at the beginning of the second half. From Riyad Mahrez’s cross on the left, defender Ake entered the fight and headed in the second column without being marked. The ball hit the goalkeeper of the away team but he could not save.
West Ham were forced to rise up and at one point they kept the ball for nearly 90% of the time, but did not create good opportunities. On the contrary, the away team also failed to pass in the middle of the field for Man City to counterattack quickly. Grealish poked a gap for Haaland to dive down to break the offside trap, then click the ball over the goalkeeper’s head into the net.
The 23-year-old striker sat down on the pitch to meditate, as his teammates ran over to celebrate with him. Haaland broke Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s record for goals in a single Premier League season. And he still has five games ahead of him to improve his record.
closed the match with Phil Foden’s volley grazing defender Emerson’s foot and changing direction into the net, marking a 3-0 victory. They will continue to play at Etihad Stadium in their next match against Leeds in the Premier League on May 6. After that, Haaland and his teammates went to Madrid to meet Real in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.
