The familiar refrain of “changing the narrative” has made its way back into discussions surrounding the Miami Dolphins, especially fresh on the lips of Head Coach Mike McDaniel. Speaking to the media on Tuesday before the team’s first open OTA this offseason, McDaniel brought up this concept once again, particularly when discussing the Dolphins’ looking ahead to their 2024 game lineup.
When questioned about the challenges of a 2024 schedule that culminates in a string of tough games, including encounters with four teams that made the playoffs last season and a doubleheader against Aaron Rodgers’ New York Jets, McDaniel saw an opportunity in the adversity. “If you’re wanting to change a narrative, you’re going to have an opportunity,” he stated. To McDaniel, speculating on the schedule’s difficulty is less important than focusing on playing competitive football and embracing the unique challenges it brings, from prime-time games to varying game week lengths.
McDaniel’s confidence extends to believing that his team will crave the challenges awaiting them in the latter part of the season, particularly excited about what the schedule could mean for the Dolphins’ development.
However, the Dolphins face an uphill battle to shift perceptions after a disappointing close to their 2023 season, losing their last three games including a playoff fixture at Kansas City and struggling similarly at the end of the previous season. Their final six games of 2024 will not make this task any easier, with a schedule that leads them through rigorous contests at spots like Green Bay, against the Jets, and others, illustrating the steep climb ahead.
Despite what the Dolphins achieve in their first 11 games, overcoming national skepticism remains a tall order. Their recent history of late-season fadeouts casts a shadow on their status as genuine contenders in the AFC. This skepticism was evident as the Dolphins were notably excluded from NFL.com analyses spotlighting teams with potential to unseat the Kansas City Chiefs or those with the most complete rosters.
Some positive recognition does exist for the Dolphins across various platforms; however, attaining widespread acclaim hinges on their ability to address and transcend their end-of-season narratives.
