Rudy Gay defends the Lakers’ decision to draft Bronny James, praising the father-son duo’s historic opportunity alongside LeBron.
The upcoming NBA season will be a historic one for the Los Angeles Lakers due to the spotlight on their roster. This is because a father-son duo will be on the same team for the first time in NBA history, as the Lakers drafted Bronny James, son of four-time NBA champion LeBron James.
Furthermore, while it has generated negative as well as positive reviews, the discussion continued on the ‘Scoop B Radio Podcast,’ where longtime NBA veteran Rudy Gay weighed in. Gay shared his perspective on the Lakers’ decision and what his thoughts are about the issue.
I’ve talked to a lot of people about it. And I see no problem with it, man. I mean, who doesn’t want to help their kids out? He’ll be a good pro… think he’s going to have a good career, but, you know, everybody needs a push every now and then.Rudy Gay said
Gay isn’t the only one to chip in as recently the legendary Shaquille O’Neal voiced his support for the rookie, dispelling talks centered on nepotism. Bronny is, however, expected to spend some time in the G-League in order to develop his skills and adjust to the professional level.
He also has the backing of Lakers owner, Jeanie Buss, who has been impressed with his work ethics. Moreover, the way he ended the Summer League only shows that he can rise above adversity and not depend on his family name.
Bryce James excited about the prospect of elder brother teaming up with dad
Bryce James, like most fans, was excited about his elder brother getting drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers and setting up the chance for him to play alongside his father. He described the experience as surreal and reflected on it during an episode of ‘UNINTERRUPTED’s Top Class Hoops.’
You know, it's a great feeling, knowing that my brother, the journey that he's had came that far, from the cardiac arrest, to all the difficulties that he's had in his career, college. It's amazing, seeing him play with his dad. I've always looked at him, of course he's my big brother, it was definitely a great experience just seeing how far he's [come], the journey that he had to go through.Bryce James said
LeBron’s long-standing goal to play alongside his son in the NBA will soon come to pass and it was the expectation that the Lakers would draft Bronny to ensure LeBron’s continued presence on the team. However Coach JJ Redick felt it was for a different reason.
For Bryce, he is realistic about his own future in the NBA, as he stated during an Instagram Live session in June that by the time he’s eligible for the draft, his dad will be much older. He has, however, been seen challenging his dad and making moves for his throne.
