Riddick 4: Furya is officially happening, with development on the long awaited Vin Diesel sci-fi sequel well underway. The first three movies in the Riddick franchise, Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013), have accumulated a cult following. Riddick was introduced as a lethal criminal en route an off-world prison in Pitch Black. When the transport crash lands on a monster-infested planet, Riddick uses his unique abilities to survive until daylight. In The Chronicles of Riddick, Vin Diesel’s character was given a grand narrative within which to take part, and the Furyan’s story will continue to expand when Riddick 4: Furya arrives.
The Riddick franchise remains one of Vin Diesel’s most celebrated properties, thanks in part to his partnership with writer and directer David Twohy across the entire triology. Both are returning for Riddick 4, and the details revealed by the pair so far hint that the wait will have been worth it for fans of the franchise — even if it has been over a decade. Riddick 4: Furya will finally explore the origins of Vin Diesel’s sci-fi antihero, and while the release date may be a little ways off there’s plenty to discuss when it comes to the new Riddick movie.
The Latest Riddick 4: Furya News
The most recent news on Riddick 4: Furya arrived in May 2023, when Vin Diesel revealed yet more first-look images from the behind-the-scenes conceptual development of the new Riddick movie (via Movieweb). The Riddick 4 cast lead took to Instagram to share some new concept art for Riddick 4, this time showing Riddick walking away with what appears to be a scythe made of lightning emanating from his arm.
The plot implications of the image for Riddick 4: Furya are unclear. The Riddick franchise is definitely a passion project for Vin Diesel, and he’s share many first-look teases for the next Riddick movie on his social media accounts. There hasn’t been much recent Riddick 4 news beyond this, but this may be due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have slowed or halted development on many projects. Nothing was ever announced or confirmed officially by Vin Diesel or David Twohy, but it’s likely that there wasn’t muchprogress made on Riddick 4 during this period. With the WGA strikes concluding in September 2023 it’s possible further updates on the next Riddick movie will follow.
Riddick 4: Furya is Confirmed
Riddick 4: Furya is confirmed, with the announcement that the Vin Diesel sequel was in development arriving in February 2023. Riddick 4 will be helmed by Pitch Black director David Twohy. Vin Diesel has teased Riddick 4 often throughout the years, but this latest announcement is the most solid so far. It wasn’t until March 2023 that director David Twohy confirmed that Riddick 4 was officially in development, and that a release date was finally within reach. Speaking to Deadline the writer and director of the Riddick trilogy revealed:
“Our legion of fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.”
While officially confirmed as in development in 2023, it was in 2014 that Universal Pictures first indicated they wanted to move forward with a fourth installment of the Riddick franchise. In 2015, Vin Diesel announced Riddick 4 would be titled Furya and confirmed it was an R-rated film. However, the movie stalled in pre-production, and Vin Diesel focused on other projects such as the Fast and Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Riddick 4: Furya Cast
Furya is still in the pre-production stages, so no Riddick 4 cast announcments have been made yet (beyond Vin Diesel of course). There are plenty of Riddick franchise cast members who could return from Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, or Riddick. Many, such as Karl Urban, Katee Sakhoff, and Dave Bautista have all had incredibly strong careers since Riddick released in 2013. Including The Boys’ Billy Butcher, The Mandalorian’s Bo-Katan Kryze, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax the Destroyer alongside Vin Diesel makes for a much more powerful casting statement in 2023 than in the early 2010s. Of all the aspects of the new Riddick movie, the returning cast could be a factor that thrusts the franchise into the mainstream.
Riddick 4: Furya Story Details
Prior to David Twohy confirmed as such through the Deadline announcement, Vin Diesel had suggested through the years that the Riddick 4 plot will delve into Riddick’s mysterious origins. The depth of storyingtelling has increased significantly in the Riddick movies since Pitch Black, and in the fourth, the Furyan fugitive will finally discover his homeworld — Furya. In The Chronicles of Riddick, Riddick’s homeworld Furya was described as a harsh world where only the strongest could survive. From Twohy’s description in 2023, where Riddick 4: Furya will take Riddick back to his birthplace, which he barely remembers. While he believes they are in danger from the Necromongers, when he arrives, he finds the Furyan’s fighting for their lives against a different enemy.

Fast and Furious 11 will bring the franchise to a close. How should Dominic Toretto’s story end, and will he die after eleven Fast Saga films?
A storyboard slide for Riddick 4 that Vin Diesel shared on Instagram showed Riddick in a spacesuit with a shocked expression on his face with a caption reading: “Scene 10 – The boy’s eyes shine just like Riddick’s.”. This was a strong hint the exploration of Riddick’s backstory might be done by introducing other characters like him on his homeworld. Judging by the storyboard, this could mean finally exploring Riddick’s infamous nigh-vision-granting eyeshine which kept him alive throughout the titular bioraptor-filled darkness in Pitch Black.
Specifics will no doubt come as production gets underway. Twohy and Vin Diesel haven’t been shy about divulging information thus far. Both understand the franchise they have created, and how important it is to the fans they owe its continued existence to. As a modestly-budgeted sci-fi horror released in the year 2000 without any notable stars to its name, Pitch Black could have easily become forgotten — a footnote in Vin Diesel’s filmography prior to movies like The Fast And The Furious. As it stands, Twohy and Diesel are able to make yet another Riddick movie 23 years later, and however Riddick 4: Furya continues the Furyan’s story, it’s confirmed it will be handled with the same care and attention to detail as the installments preceding it.
