In an effort to elevate his performance on the field, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is seeking guidance not only from within his team but also from an external source, former NFL quarterback John Beck. While this approach might raise eyebrows regarding the potential for conflicting guidance, the Dolphin’s quarterback coach, Darrell Bevell, and the team’s administration have expressed support and active involvement in this dual-coaching strategy.
Darrell Bevell emphasized the importance of maintaining an integrated coaching approach for Tagovailoa’s development. “It’s crucial that we’re all in sync,” Bevell explained, underscoring the team’s effort to collaborate with Beck to ensure a coherent and unified training regimen. The concern of mixed messages is mitigated by open lines of communication, with Bevell and Beck discussing and aligning their coaching strategies.
This offseason, Tagovailoa has been focusing on refining his throwing mechanics under Beck’s tutelage, particularly incorporating what’s known as the “rubber band theory.” This method aims to enhance the quarterback’s throwing power through a more dynamic use of his hips, enabling a more forceful and efficient throwing motion. “It’s about getting my hips more involved, which allows for a powerful, snapping motion when throwing,” Tagovailoa described, emphasizing the technique’s effectiveness.
Besides honing his technique, Tagovailoa has made notable changes to his physical conditioning, reportedly shedding 10-15 pounds to achieve a more streamlined physique, a transformation that head coach Mike McDaniel humorously described as leaving his quarterback looking “svelte.”
These concerted efforts in both physical and skill development are part of a broader strategy to build on Tagovailoa’s already impressive career, which saw him earn his first Pro Bowl invitation in the 2023 season. Bevell praised Tagovailoa’s existing strengths, like his accuracy, while pointing out that these new adjustments could enhance his throw velocity for specific passes.
As the Dolphins continue their preseason preparations, the cohesive collaboration between Tagovailoa’s team and personal coaching reflects a tailored approach to player development in the NFL. This strategy, underscored by mutual understanding and shared goals between coaches, offers Tagovailoa an invaluable opportunity to refine his skills and elevate his performance in the upcoming season.
