Taken by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 40 overall pick in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft, John Beck proved to be a bust. The former BYU quarterback threw a grand total of one touchdown pass in two years with the team before he was released in 2009.
Now, 15 years after his tenure with the Dolphins came to an unceremonious end, Beck may be responsible for helping the franchise in a major way. On Thursday, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa confirmed rumors that he is working with Beck to improve his craft.
“I want to keep [what we’re working on] between me and John, but yes, everyone, I have a quarterback coach and I am working with John Beck,” Tagovailoa said, via David Furones of the Sun Sentinel.
In a video posted earlier in the week by a production company called G.O.A.T. Farm Media, Tagovailoa appeared to be working with private coaches on a tweaked throwing motion with a focus on additional hip torque.

Tagovailoa is far from Beck’s first client. Since retiring as a player, Beck co-founded 3DQB and has worked with Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Dak Prescott and many other NFL starters.
“I wish that my story was one of success in the NFL,” Beck told NBC Sports Washington in 2021. “I wish mine was, ‘Hey, I threw 150 touchdowns. Let me show you how to do that.’ Unfortunately, that was not my story. So much of what I help guys with is the mental side, the emotional side and just trying to face those challenges that are being an NFL quarterback in difficult circumstances.”
Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards last season with 4,624, but struggled in the last two games of the regular season and the team’s postseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, throwing four touchdowns and five interceptions in those three games.
